Team Teagan

November 3, 2019

This year Jack (or should I say Lightning McQueen) and I spent our Halloween trick-or-treating alongside a real-life superhero.  Teagan, who chose to dress-up as PJ Mask’s quick thinking, high flying Owelette, has spent the last eight months battling a villain that strikes hard and fast and has proven difficult to anticipate its next attack.  Although it has wreaked havoc on every aspect of her life, Teagan has stood tall, fought back and demonstrated the same amount of courage as only the bravest of superheroes.

Last March, at the age of five, Teagan was diagnosed with epilepsy.  Her official diagnosis came after a string of scary unexplained episodes that concluded with her first of many hospital visits.  These episodes set off a whirlwind of events over the last few months that has left us feeling baffled, frustrated and angry but no matter how difficult things have become, Teagan always seems to take them in stride.  Don’t get me wrong, I have had to do my fair share of begging, bribery and outrageous promises (I may be on the hook for a unicorn or two) and Teagan’s L.O.L Surprise doll collection is growing at an alarming rate, but in the end she has always stepped-up just like any great superhero would.

Life is certainly unpredictable but with the bad comes the good if you are willing to open your eyes and search for it.  Teagan and I discovered our silver lining during our second trip to the children’s hospital when we met another young family whose daughter is also battling this disease.  Teagan and “M” became fast friends, spending hours together in the playroom making bracelets and hosting numerous dinner parties throughout the week.  While Teagan was relatively new to the “hospital kid” scene, “M” had been through this before and helped to put Teagan’s mind at ease.  Her mother “K” and I shared stories about the girls and when it came time to leave, we exchanged information and promises to keep in touch.  Teagan celebrated her sixth birthday this summer and was elated to have “M” join her for the festivities.  I have found an invaluable friend in “K,” she is my sounding board when I am unsure of what’s next, always ready to lend an ear, and never failing to show her support for Teagan and I.

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month.  Did you know that epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disease but the least understood?  Each year 150,000 more people will be diagnosed with epilepsy. Over a lifetime 1 in 10 people will have a seizure and 1 in 26 will develop epilepsy.  For additional information on epilepsy, please visit the Epilepsy Foundation website.

Jack’s Old-Fashioned Banana Pudding

October 16, 2019

Growing up I was a terrible eater and survived solely on the three most important food groups: chicken fingers and fries, Goldfish crackers and chocolate ice cream.  As I’ve gotten older, I’d like to think that my taste in food has matured a bit as I’ve added pizza, salads (getting better!) and lobster (yum!) to my list of favorites.  My brother begs to differ as he has lovingly referred to my taste in food as “that of a kindergartner.”  Well hey, I do eat most of my meals with a three and six-year-old.

As fate would have it, my son inherited my “picky eater” gene and refuses to eat anything but cheese and bananas.  I quickly learned that when you have a kid who feeds 99% of what you make for him to the dog that to outsmart a stubborn toddler you need to get creative.  Finding recipes that include his favorite foods are key so when I came across this recipe for banana pudding, I knew that I had to try it.  Guess what?  He loved it! (As evidence seen in the photos of a super happy and full toddler!)

Ingredients: Bananas, Instant Vanilla Pudding (one package), Milk, Mini Nilla Wafers, Sprinkles, Whipped Cream.

  1. Following the instructions on the package to make instant vanilla pudding (we used Jello brand).
  2. Add a few small wafers to the bottom of your glass.
  3. Add a few scoops of vanilla pudding.
  4. Add a layer of sliced bananas.
  5. Add another layer of vanilla pudding.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 until your glass is filled.
  7. Add a dollop of whipped cream on top.
  8. Add colorful sprinkles.

Happy eating!

Peace, Love & Ice Cream

October 16, 2019

On Saturday night I received a text from my brother, “Are you guys coming tomorrow?”  I mulled it over in my head, slept on it and then did some more mulling the next morning during my gym workout.  I was tired from a long week, but the weather was perfect, and the kids were begging to see their cousins, so I halfheartedly agreed.

We took the kids to the playground where they cheerfully bounced around from the swings to the giant slide across the monkey bars and back over to the swings where they competed to see who could swing the highest.  A sudden fear of heights abruptly ended that competition and the kids raced to the soccer fields to show off their skills to their uncle DJ.  The girls dribbled a bit and took a few shots but soon decided that it was time to focus on their beauty routine and needed to freshen up their “makeup.”  Jack made a beeline back to the playground where he scaled a rock wall and dared to jump from the top.  After giving me a near heart attack, we decided that a change in scenery and treating the kids to ice cream would quiet things down.  (Yes, we thought that giving sugar to the kid who thought that he had super powers and could fly off a rock wall was a great idea).

The ice cream parlor was a quaint little shop adorned with 1960’s pop art that was run by an elderly hippie.  At the front of the shop stood a glass case that enclosed an assortment of unique and delicious looking waffle cones.  Teagan’s face light up with excitement as she pressed her hands into the glass. “Grandma, this cone has Lucky Charms on it!  It’s my favorite because it’s a unicorn cone.”  We chatted up the owner to find out how he made each of his special waffle cones so that we could re-create them at home.

We didn’t have to wait long because thanks to Mother Nature and the Indian summer that we’ve been having we had the perfect ice cream weather the very next day.  If you have a little one at home that loves unicorns, Lucky Charms or just ice cream (I proudly admit that I love all three!) here is the recipe to Teagan’s Unicorn Cones.

Teagan’s Unicorn Cones

Ingredients: Lucky Charms cereal, Marshmallows (Large), Waffle Cones

  1. Place a handful of large marshmallows into a glass bowl and microwave at 10 second intervals until marshmallows are melted and hot.
  2. Dip the waffle cones into the bowl of melted marshmallows.
  3. Dip the waffle cone into a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal.
  4. Place aside to cool.
  5. Scoop a few scoops of your favorite ice cream into the cone and enjoy!

Sometimes we just need a little nudge to push us in the right direction.  Spending time with my family this weekend gave me some much-needed perspective and helped me re-focus my energy back onto projects that I’ve been and super excited about.  The kids had a blast racing around together and to top it off we scored this yummy new recipe.

March for Babies

June 5, 2018

Every year, I spend the very last Sunday in April taking a brisk five mile walk with a few hundred of my closest friends to help support an amazing cause.  This incredible event is organized by the March of Dimes Foundation whose goal is to tackle the issues that threaten the health of every mom and every baby.

This year, Teagan and I bundled up and braved the early morning chill to walk in our third March for Babies walk.  While I first began walking in April 2015 as a way to cope after suffering my own loss, I now walk to remember and to honor my angel and to help others facing similar difficult situations.  I remember during the opening ceremonies at my very first event being taken aback by the families’ personal stories about how the March of Dimes Foundation stood by them and provided support during such a trying time in their lives.

Each year, the March of Dimes raises the bar not only on their fundraising goal but also on the activities at the event.  From a Budweiser Horse & Buggy ride to a DJ, a memory garden, the superhero sprint (for our superhero kids) and even a personal visit from Batman himself (in his Batmobile, of course!), this family friendly event is not only a fun day out but a great way to help support the health of all mothers and babies.

My favorite and most emotional part (yes, I still cry every time) is the reading of the babies’ names, those who we are celebrating and those who we are remembering.  After the reciting of the names, a bevy of doves are released and slowly circle the crowd before disappearing into the distance.  In that moment, when the doves are just a speck in the sky, I always feel thankful to be part of such a powerful cause.

I left my very first March for Babies walk not only with a sense of closure but also feeling as if I was not alone which was so important for me at the time.  Each year, I feel as if I’ve grown stronger and become more at peace with my own loss and I can only hope that others leave feeling the same.

If you’d like to consider donating to the March of Dimes Foundation or participating in one of their March for Babies walks, please visit their website.

Ladies Night Out

April 30, 2018

I remember when I was a little girl, my mother would occasionally get all glammed up for a night out with her girlfriends.  As much as I dreaded being left with my two mischievous brothers (they’d team up and plot against me), I loved nothing more than to study my mother as she carefully applied her makeup and donned my grandmother’s antique jewels.  I’d gently slip my toes into her high heels and clomp around her bedroom dreaming of the day when those heels would slip perfectly onto my feet.  My mother would finish her routine with two spritzes of her favorite perfume, one for me and one for her.  Every now and then, I swear that I can still smell just a hint of that sweet floral scent.

My grandmother was quite the fashionista in her day, donning heels and a dress to run errands at the store and having a standing weekly appointment at the hair salon.  She was a true trailblazer and to me the very epitome of glam which she carried through even into her eighties.  She instilled the belief into my mother that ladies should always put their best fashion foot forward who then passed that wisdom onto me.  So, when the opportunity presented itself to have a glamorous night out with my girlfriends at a local charity event, I took my grandmother’s advice and followed in my mother’s footsteps and transformed myself from exhausted mom of two to an elegant (and sparkly) fashionista.

April Showers

April 23, 2018

We are already into the first few weeks of April and I feel like mother nature hasn’t gotten the memo that April Fool’s Day is over.  What’s with this weather?  First, we get that invigorating burst of sunshine followed by clouds, rain and snow (yes, snow)!?  With all the confusion on what season that we are in, I’m finding it hard to plan out an outfit for the day that can take me from sunshine to snowfall all in under 24 hours.

My daughter on the other hand is loving this weather.  The other morning when I was taking her to school she happily raced around the driveway with her hands in the air shouting, “Mommy look, it’s like we are living in a giant snow globe.”  She was right, the snow was falling heavily around us and it was quite magical.

Every day after school my daughter begs me to let her run around with her friends outside to expel all their extra energy that they’ve stored up throughout the school day.  Usually, I gladly agree but with all the storms that we’ve been having lately and the muddy mess that has ensued, I’ve promised her that once we buy her new rain boots she can splash around in as many muddy puddles as she likes.  That’s when I realized that maybe the answer to my spring outfit debacle was a great pair of rain boots for myself.

So last week on a rainy Monday (go figure), I loaded the kids into the car and we set off on the hunt for the perfect pair of rain boots.  I scored these navy Hunter boots at Lord & Taylor and I love them because they can take me from working in the garden on warm spring days straight into those cold rainy days and (eek!) even snowy days.  Pair them with skinny jeans and a flowy top or dress them up with a short summer dress and you’ll be sure to stun.

Hunter recently designed a collection of rain boots for men, women and children that is exclusively being sold at Target so our hunt will continue there for the perfect pair of rain boots for Teagan to test out those muddy puddles in.

Tell me, what’s your must have spring accessory?

Spring Warm Up

April 14, 2018

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been drawn to sports and other activities that allowed me to tap into my athletic abilities.  Maybe it was because I was the only girl wedged between two brothers whose own athletic careers cast them into the limelight or because my father was a star basketball player and a self-proclaimed sports fanatic who loved nothing more than to watch his three kids train and compete and so in return I worked hard to make him proud.  Either way, fitness and competition have always been an important part of my life.

Over the years I’ve traded in my soccer cleats and running shoes for my gym sneakers, dumbbells and a yoga mat.  Although my workout regimen has changed, my drive, competitive nature and love for fun and stylish activewear hasn’t.  These days life can be hectic.  Between caring for two young toddlers and keeping track of their activity schedules and the household responsibilities, the time that I spend at the gym is my time to leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life and work on myself.

One thing that my time at the gym has taught me is that Spring 2018 is all about working hard to get fit and looking good doing it.  From Athleta to Fabletics to Lululemon, there is no shortage of sexy-chic activewear that will make you feel as good as you look.  This season I’m obsessed with the earth tone color trend and flirty tops with cutouts that reveal just enough to earn that second (or third!) look.  I love that designers have finally created versatile athleisure that is practical and stylish enough to go from the gym to the grocery store to after school playdates.

One of my favorite ways to end a long (and sometimes chaotic) week is to attend a candlelight yoga class.  I find that there is no better way to melt away stress than to stretch your muscles and reconnect with your mind, body and spirit.  When it comes to yoga wear, I prefer to wear outfits that hug my curves and allow me to ease into and concentrate on my Nataraja (Lord of the Dance Pose) rather than tugging on loose clothing.  I recently purchased this outfit from Athleta to add to my spring activewear collection and I cannot wait to wear it to my next yoga class. Although, I might be slightly more excited for the five minutes of uninterrupted meditation by candlelight (hey, a mom can dream!).  Namaste.

Cabin Fever

February 21, 2018

Every year on Groundhog Day we hold our breath as Punsxutawney Phil is coaxed from his lair to easily make one of the biggest and most important weather predictions of the year.  Will we have to withstand six more weeks of winter or will we be gifted with an early spring?  For those of us (that’s me) who weren’t built to endure the bitterly cold New Jersey winters (hello single digits!), Phil’s irrational fear of his own shadow has left us in quite the chilly predicament.  Now, I don’t know about you but I am eager to store away my winter gear, slip on my favorite pair of shades, and strut outside into the sunshine.  But before we can enjoy that warm spring air we must brave the last few weeks of winter and beat the inevitable cabin fever.  Here is my plan with four ways to beat that cabin fever and coast into spring:

Plan a day trip or a weekend getaway

Spend a day in the city checking out a museum that you’ve never been to or plan a day trip with girlfriends to a quaint historic town that offers old school goodies like antique stores and rare mom & pop shops.  Walk around, explore, get excited and I promise at the end of the day you’ll feel refreshed.  One weekend getaway on my bucket list is to an estate the lies in the heart of the Hudson Valley.  Cedar Lake Estates was built on the grounds of an old summer camp and offers activities such as hiking, yoga and drive-in movies.  I love that their cottages are suitable for a couple on a romantic getaway or a family on a weekend trip (decisions, decisions) and are outfitted with décor that combines rustic old-world charm with modern elegance.  Combine the backdrop, the décor and the home cooked meals and you have one weekend getaway that I’d call swoon-worthy.

Start a new hobby

When the holiday celebrations have come to an end and we enter the thick of winter I always start to feel a bit antsy.  With my favorite time of the season behind us and some of the coldest days ahead, I find myself longing for that warm spring weather and outdoor fun.  This year however, I decided that I wouldn’t let those winter blues get me down and I focused my attention on photography.  With one basic class down and an intermediate class on my radar I am excited to learn, to challenge myself and to begin my portfolio.  Focusing my energy on photography has not only helped me keep my mind off the calendar (come on March 20th!) but it has revitalized my mood and given me an amazing new skill.  But don’t let the seasons totally dictate when you want to try something new, come springtime I’m all about taking up golf!

Throw a party

There’s no better way to cure the wintertime blues than good food, good wine, and great friends.  Chances are that if you are starting to have that cabin fever kick in than your friends are too.  Throw an impromptu get together for a couple’s game night or set a date and send out invites for a more lavish event.  Play some old-time favorites, get that dance floor ready and belly laugh the night away. Either way, you and your guests are bound to have a great time.

Get outside and exercise

They say “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” so get outside and get your body moving.  Instead of dreading the cold weather, find the fun in it.  Go ice skating, take a ski lesson or find the tallest hill and go on the sleigh ride of your life.  Build a snowman, make snow angels or have a snow ball fight.  Run, dance, jump and glide.  Act like a kid again.  Not only will you have a blast getting those endorphins pumping but the fresh air and exercise will do your body good.

Coincidentally, the temperature today was a perfect 66 degrees and tomorrow is looking even better.  I guess Punsxutawney Phil is beginning to lose his edge a bit.  Either way, I’ll be saying so long to my cabin fever!

Twinkies & Tea

February 14, 2018

Okay, I’ll admit it.  I am a chocolate fiend and with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, I am just days away from chocolate heaven.  With chocolate hearts, truffles, cakes and a handful of other chocolate goodies overflowing the shelves at the bakery, it would be easy for me to cave and purchase any one of these delicious treats to serve as a Valentine’s Day dessert and be completely satisfied with my choice.  This year however, I challenged myself to make my own dessert without chocolate.  Enter Twinkies.

I discovered this quick, easy and oh so delicious recipe for two combining Twinkies, raspberry jam and fresh raspberries at CountryLiving.com.  I was completely smitten with the adorable presentation of this dessert and was intrigued to find out if it tasted half as good as it looked.  So, my daughter and I declared it a girl’s day and went straight to work.  I’ll be the first to admit that I will not be auditioning for Top Chef anytime soon so I was pleasantly surprised by how easy this recipe was and how delicious it tasted.  Cake, cream, jam and fresh raspberries…yum!  As a finishing touch for our girl’s day, Teagan and I paired our desserts with two nice hot cups of tea (because let’s face it, there is nothing little girls (or their moms) love to do more than have a tea party).

This Is Me

February 12, 2018

My name is Daryl and I was born and raised in a small town in New Jersey where everyone knew each other’s gossip and town was only a short walk from home.  In the summer, I would ride my bicycle to the local ice cream shop or meet my friends at the lake for a swim or a daring jump from the highest diving board.  I loved growing up there especially in the summer when school let out and the anticipation of what great things lay ahead caused butterflies in my stomach.

My childhood home stood on a hill overlooking a nature preserve filled with all kinds of beautiful wildlife, exotic plants and visitors who traveled from near and far to experience what I was lucky enough to see every day.  On an occasional weekend, I would get up early in the morning and take a jog or a long walk through the wetlands on the trail that outlined a large lake that rested in the center of the preserve.  It was here that I fell in love with nature and decided that someday I needed to travel and discover more of nature’s treasures.

My mother would often take my brothers and I on road trips to visit my grandmother who lived about an hour and a half west of us.  At the entrance to my grandmother’s town stood an old stone “round tunnel” for which we impatiently awaited its arrival.  Reaching the tunnel not only signified the end to a long trip but it was also our chance to blow off a little “boredom” steam and go crazy honking the horn as we passed through.  This was our ritual every time we traveled through that tunnel although sometimes I wonder if it started because my mother needed to blow off some real steam after driving 60 miles while listening to us sing the “Are we there yet?” song on repeat.

Large dairy farms with big red barns and beautiful old farm houses led the way to my grandmother’s home.  I remember sitting quietly in the backseat of the car with my face plastered against the window trying to get a glimpse of the farms and the animals that grazed the fields.  One time my mother pulled the car over to let us stretch our legs and to see some cows that had wandered over to the rail fence to see what all the commotion was about.  I remember thinking how beautiful the cows and the scenery were and since then I’ve always loved photographs of cows and horses and have just recently began to get into photography myself.  I plan on taking some trips to take my own photographs and I am excited to see how they turn out and to share them with you.  We ended that short driving break when we heard a loud crunching noise behind us and turned to see one of the cows munching on a juice box that my brother had held up to show him.

The first time that I moved away from my childhood home was to attend college in the city of Baltimore.  Although I grew up only a short distance from New York City, I had never lived in a big city before.  City life was certainly different, old oak trees were replaced with traffic lights and the sound of the birds chirping outside of my window were now the soothing sounds of car horns and speeding motorcycles.  One thing did remain the same though; I still loved to write and this city gave me a fresh new perspective to write from.  I decided to major in Communications with the intention of having a career in event planning and not long after I graduated I landed a job in conference and event planning.

Eventually, I moved back home to the area where I grew up to once again plant my roots and to start a family of my own.  I have spent the last few years renovating two homes and bearing the title of contractor, designer, painter, landscape designer, and most importantly, mommy / comedian / best buddy and multitasking crusader to my two children.  My son just recently celebrated his first birthday and my daughter will begin kindergarten in September.  As I start a new chapter in my life, this blog will be my journal documenting my travels, my current style both in fashion and home, trends in fitness and health, and my family’s adventures.  So come along with me…
